ESPN The decision to add wooden doors to the exterior of the iconic wooden door at the National Mall is a move that fans and visitors alike are excited to see.
In addition to the new door, the interior of the building also received a facelift with a glass front that now sports the iconic white “F” in the shape of the White House seal.
“It’s just a really nice addition, especially when you look at it from the front,” said Sarah Smith, a National Mall volunteer who spent three years with the project.
“You know that you’re in the National Capital Region and that you have something unique here.”
The project was spearheaded by the National Park Service and the Smithsonian Institution.
The National Park Foundation has funded the project, and the building is currently under construction.
The project has been on the back burner since President Donald Trump took office in January, but Smith said that the National Museum of American History is also working on a project in the area.
“They’re very excited to get the opportunity to add these things to their collection and to have this kind of opportunity to really get to know the architecture and to really be a part of history and to be able to explore those spaces,” Smith said.
The new door was designed by the architectural firm WMS Group, and was created by an artist from Brooklyn, who had been inspired by the white marble walls at the White Capitol in Washington, D.C. The wooden door was initially commissioned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but the agency dropped the project when the new administration took office.
The Smithsonian Institution said the project is part of a larger effort to connect the national capital region with the history of American architecture and design.
The White House was built by President George Washington, but was later converted to a museum.
The historic structure is one of the few remaining structures on the National Register of Historic Places, but has remained off-limits to the public.
It is home to the National Zoo, the Smithsonian’s National Museum, and a replica of the original White House that was constructed in the 1800s.
In March, the National Gallery of Art announced it was removing its White House, which is located in Washington’s Old Town section.
“We are committed to preserving our architectural heritage and to creating new experiences for the people who visit the National Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, and National Archives in the future,” the gallery said in a statement.
“The National Museum is dedicated to the preservation of America’s most significant buildings and artifacts, and is proud to offer visitors a unique and rich and diverse collection of American art and architecture, as well as other works of art and design from around the world.”
